Abdominal Pain in Children

Causes and associated treatments

If the child has a mild pain in the abdomen, but looks good otherwise, then you may be perhaps sure that the problem is not that serious. But you should consult with the doctor if the pain in the abdomen is severe enough. Some of the important reasons of severe abdominal pain in children are:

  • Psychological factors.
  • Medical reasons
  • Surgical conditions.

Psychological factors

School going children sometimes complains of abdominal pain, usually located around their navel. In most of the cases, the pain is not that severe and the children forget all about it if they are involved in something interesting to do. Rarely does it wake the child at night from sleep and the child is almost all right in between the attack of abdominal pain that may last for only a few moments or a little longer than that, but hardly for more than an hour.

Emotional trauma because of any reason may be the main cause of that type of abdominal pain in such type of children. May be the child is being bullied in school or perhaps he is afraid of a new teacher or the examinations are causing much anxiety for the child. Children may also be upset because of the quarrel between his parents. These may be responsible for that abdominal pain.

It is not always an easy task to probe the mind of children. If the symptoms yet persist, you should take the consult with a doctor, who may even unsurprisingly refer that child to a psychologist family counselor or a psychiatrist. You should not make the child upset by the remarks for example, “You are acting on pain” or “You are trying to fool us”. Such children really get pain, but the symptom perhaps is related more to their mind instead of the body; may be a subconscious way in order to attract the attention of parents for more contact. So, the treatment is in understanding the mind of the child and lies in helping the child to overcome the emotional pain, if any.

Medical reasons

Although different worm attacks are responsible for abdominal pain in children, the tendency to presume that predominant reason in most cases is not right. Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and threadworms can be completely eradicated by taking Mebendazole or Albendazole. Care should always be taken in order to treat the entire family if any worm is found in the stool of the children. For treating the Tapeworms Praziquantel and Niclosamide are used.

Amebiasis and Giardiasis may be suspected in children with continuous or persistent pain in the abdomen. A stool inspection with a fresh sample is said for in order to confirm about the diagnosis. Course of Metronidazole can solve the problem in most of the cases. In some cases amoeba may enter to the liver and create Hepatic Amoebiasis. This problem leads to abdominal pain of different degrees. If treated improperly, then it may cause to a liver abscess. In this case a complete course of Tinidazole or Metronidazole should be administered to relieve this pain. Ornidazole and Secnidazole can also be used in some cases. But in some cases that seems to be difficult, a long and full course of Chloroquine should be given.

Bacillary Dysentery is also an important reason of continuous pain in the abdomen along with the passage of mucus or blood with the stools, which not necessarily be loose. Such condition is treated by using a wide range of antibiotics.

Surgical conditions

Appendicitis, Intussusceptions, Intestinal Obstruction, Torsion of Testes, and Strangulated Hernia, all starts with abdominal pain before showing other signs and symptoms. The pain increases rapidly and if immediate surgery is not done, then the situation may become life threatening.

Another common cause of severe pain in the abdomen is a stone in the urinary tract. The pain in the abdomen with a stone is sudden. The pain sometimes is located in the back and from there it extends towards the groin.

Ultrasonography can usually clinch the diagnosis. Laser, conventional surgery or Cystoscopy should be needed for removing the stone depending on their sizes and site.

Conclusion

The parents need not panic if their child has the severe abdominal pain. A proper diagnosis and proper treatment can easily cure the problem with the modern specialization of medical treatment.
